So Kong Dong Tofu House - Edison, New Jersey

I’ve been visiting So Kong Dong for almost 15 years, from Fort Lee to Edison. They are good as usual. Nice staff and great tofu soup.
However, I think they change their beef in their tofu soup, from small slices to minced beef. The flavor is a bit different. Not sure it’s a location difference.

This is one of few Korean options in the Edison area, so it's certainly a welcome presence when the hankering for spicy soft tofu stew hits. So Gong Dong is a chain restaurant, and I've had decent meals at one of their other locations so I came in knowing what to expect.

The namesake soft tofu stew is fairly decent, and SGD restaurants offer the option of rice, ramen, or udon as the accompanying carb with your stew. Spice levels are modifiable, from no spice to very hot. Bear in mind that if you order it with noodles, the stew will come in a stainless steel bowl rather than the traditional hot stone bowls (which tend to retain heat a little better and keep the stew bubbling while you eat).

This past visit, I broke habit and ordered a hot stone bibimbap, which I quickly realized was a mistake for two reasons. One, they use the wide, flat pans, which I've generally found subpar to the stone bowls because they don't seem to get as hot and therefore never create the kind of char I want on the rice. Secondly, I ordered it with tofu as the protein, which just created a wet, sloppy mess as I mixed the bibimbap together. In future visits, I'll know to stick with the tofu stews that SGD is known for.

Two few things are noteworthy about this location -
- The restaurant is located in a large complex, so parking is plentiful.
- At the time this review is being written, there is some heavy construction going on next door. With such raucous drilling and hammering against the wall, our family could barely hear people talking right across the table from us. Things got a LOT better when we asked to be reseated on the other side of the restaurant, but that might not always be an option when things get busier.

One of the worst soondubu I’ve had. The soup was watery and did not have much flavor. I ordered kimchi soondubu which usually has some kind of meat at other restaurants but mine literally only has tofu and kimchi in it. And the kimchi looked old/overboiled. Soondubu in general is also supposed to have scallion, onion, or other veggies in it. It should not just be tofu and whatever topping you get. Also the rice was mushy and did not have a good texture to it. Side dishes were a little salty. Service is okay, they do their job but don’t go the extra mile to ask if the food is good or not. I haven’t tried other dishes, but soondubu is their speciality, so I was really disappointed. I recommend going to BCD or just make your own soondubu if you’re really craving it.

Service and food were amazing! As a Korean American the food is comfort food! The LA Galbi is amazing and a must try, and always get the SoonDuBu, as this is the signature dish. Cannot say enough, and the side dishes are always a welcome addition .

Had to be the worst sgd chain tofu soup I had. It tasted nothing like soft tofu.

I ordered delivery via Ubereats. I got an extra side kimchi cucumber for additional $3, and one of them (not sure if it’s original, or the extra) only has 5 pieces of cucumber. I wonder why

I’m gonna keep this very short; the food was decent, but customer service SUCKS! We never got water even after having to ask for it. Ended up not getting any water the whole time we were there, and to make it worse, the server chased out down after we left because we left poor tip. I honestly wished I never left any tip in the first place because these servers don’t deserve it. This experience alone made sure we never come back here.

I really loved the food and the service . They brought some small plates too with appetizers and sides beside our main courses. Definitely recommended , will come back.
